Niagara-on-the-Lake Part Deux

After Picard's Peanuts, I wanted to bring A to Peller Wine Estates to sample the region's iconic ice wine and to chill out because although that place might seem super atas, it has beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, we were running behind schedule so we headed straight towards the town to start shopping. I had specific shops to go to and things to buy (items to add to JY's birthday hamper) so it was pretty straightforward from there.

Before we started shopping, A decided that she wanted to walk the whole street first before shopping. When I say 'street', the shopping in this town is quite literally only on that one street. Very convenient.

We parked at the Court House theatre..

The view of Queen Street from the side road we came out from.

What's a small town without the quintessential horse drawn carriage rides?

A proud Canadian Institution - Niagara On the Lake edition.

As you can see, excessively sugary treats were available almost everywhere.

Fudge is cool to look at and we got to see a stage of it being made. Not a fan of it unfortunately, it is just a monotone of texture and sweetness.
This was pretty good though, the ice wine gave it something extra.

Candied Apples.
It is exactly what its name means. Now, you might be staring at this wondering who could possibly finish eating one of these. I mean, I have a pretty mean sweet tooth but even I get a little nauseous looking at this. (I have actually attempted to eat one in the past and I didn't make it past four bites. Fail.) Of course, right after I made this comment, two girls walked past happily munching on these. One each. HOW? /Barf

The Pièce de résistance was this store called The Sixth Sense which sells all kinds of fruity vinegars and hot sauce. A foodie's haven I would imagine. This was the store I really wanted to bring A as you will see.

This sweet selection of fruit and herb infused vinegars and oils. Alas, too heavy an purchase for me to carry back. I was banking on the fact that my Dad had bought some when he visited last September.

They also have a pretty hilarious collection of novelty hot sauces.

 This was my favourite.

An aptly named coffee.

This is their infamous sauce. If you try it, they make you sign a disclaimer stating that they were not to be held responsible for any mishaps or after effects that might happen to you as a result of the sauce.

A holding up the disclaimer. Despite the fact that she is covering her face, I can conclude that the sauce didn't really make an impact. I mean, she grew up on a chilli heavy diet. And she was my chilli tolerance coach. I should've known better.  "I'm buying for novelty's sake." - A. Indeed.

After the sauce tasting, I vaguely remembered that Peller Wine Estates had a store in town. I figured if we couldn't go to the Vineyard itself, we could still buy stuff that was made there. True enough, asking around led us to the Peller Store.

This was the discovery of the day. If you've tried ice wine before you'll know that it is very sweet and heavy and the taste can become overpowering after a while. I like ice wine but this is so much better. Late Harvest Ice Wine is basically made from the last batch of grapes harvested before the season ends. It has the most wonderful light and refreshing taste. Its sweetness is also subtler. I don't think I can go back to normal ice wine but unfortunately for me, I don't think they'll sell these outside of Canada. Or even outside of Niagara region.

I shall just have to savour the one bottle I *had* to buy.

So this was beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake! I really wished we stayed for lunch but we just didn't have the time do that. Plus, the fact that the previous time I had lunch there our party sat there for 4 hours and missed everything else we wanted to do was weighing rather heavily on my mind. It's the food and the wine and the scenery that makes you...not want to move.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, how country can you sound?

It's been a week since I've been back and I've finally decided to catch up on all the blogging I didn't get the chance to do so heads up if there's any confusion regarding the chronological order of the posts.

We finally set off for Niagara Falls on Saturday April 7th after putting it off for an entire week. I was worried about packing so I wanted to finish off most of it before we left for a day long trip. In addition, the weather was supposedly fabulous (and it was) on Saturday.

I must say I'm pretty proud that I didn't get lost on the way. The route to Niagara is pretty straightforward but still, this was my first ever road trip. First, a stop at Tim Hortons for Coffee and Sandwiches then we were on our way. The drive to Niagara was wonderful, its so much more fun when you get to drive (I've been a passenger many times). We wound down the windows and blasted music all the way. I noticed we got some cars honking and signalling to us as they drove past. Then I realized how strange it must have been to wind down your windows and blast music on a major highway such as the 401.

You'd find some of our music choices particularly interesting. It was K-Pop for the start of the drive (2NE1 and Big Bang songs make for awesome road trip tunes) followed by some electro and then..we hit the sardonic high: Hokkien Songs. A has got a trove of videos somewhere. Yes, she has a video of a lovely drive along the Niagara countryside set to the tune of... 'Ji Pa Ban'. More on this in the Niagara Falls post.

Like I said, the weather was to die for. Cool, sunny and the kind of blue sky that can only be conjured up in your imagination.

A point on geography, Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake are two different places. The Falls itself is about a half hour drive from Niagara-on-the-Lake but if you're travelling to the falls, this town is a MUST visit. Its a picturesque small town with some great shops selling the food and drinks of the region along with the usual souvenir shops. Literary fans, this town boasts numerous tributes to the Irish writer George Bernard Shaw.

Our first stop was Picard's Peanuts, on the outskirts of the Niagara-on-the-Lake.  I love this place and its a regular stop for me every time I'm around the Niagara region. They also let you try most of the flavours before you buy them and no awkward feelings in regards to asking for more because they just put an entire canister of that particular flavour on the shelf for you to try (or in our case, eat) your fill.

Nuts rank high as one of my favourite foods so I have to set phasers to self control whenever I'm in the store and boy, do they know how to wave a giant flag of temptation in your face.

A in the foreground with the red basket, getting excited about ploughing through the collection.

They've got some pretty cute candy choices too:

Productivity reigns at 4 in the AM

I knew I was a morning person.

Okay, the jet lag thing? It comes at the other end. In the morning. But at least I get through the day and early night.

I decided to do something productive with my time if I couldn't stay in bed any longer.

Books, books, books. Everywhere.

I forgot to take a before picture of my bookshelves but just imagine two layers of books stacked on each section of the shelf.

Another shelf emptied, another victory.

They were all sent here, in brown cardboard detention boxes.

And finally,
Your pseudo intellectual picture of the day.

A special note of thanks to A, who basically did all the packing/arranging of books in all but one of the boxes. I, quite simply, only shove things in boxes with not much consideration of how nicely they're going to fit. But she has garnered experience packing viagra at her job in Biopolis (you can ask her about it here) , so everything was Fairy Godmother wand waving magic over my self/mouse-sewn attempts at packing (keeping with the Cinderella theme). No space shall be wasted with her around!
